Program Overview

UMass Lowell's Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering is designed to develop decision-making, research-oriented engineers with the ability to produce new engineering knowledge and analyze complex, cross-disciplinary issues. 

Doctoral students can choose among the following areas of concentration:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geoenvironmental Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Structural Engineering

Curriculum

Successful applicants are expected to perform advanced research in one or more areas of concentration within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and successfully complete both core courses and electives that may be drawn from a variety of disciplines.

    There was a 65-year age gap between the oldest member of UMass Lowell’s Class of 2025, 83-year-old John Doherty, and the youngest members, 18-year-old twins Franzi and Edward Hoene, but the graduates were united by a love of learning and a desire to grow.
