Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

2018-2019 Merit Scholarships

Massachusetts Residents 

First-time, first-year in-state undergraduate applicants are eligible to be considered for the scholarships listed in this section.

Chancellor's Merit Scholarship

UMass Lowell is proud to award the Chancellor's Merit Scholarship, our most prestigious scholarship, to a very select number of our most academically qualified admitted freshmen who are permanent residents of Massachusetts. The Chancellor's Scholarship recognizes outstanding incoming freshmen who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, leadership and community engagement. The scholars are successful student leaders who seek out and embrace opportunities to enrich their educational experiences. Selection will be based on a student's academic accomplishments as well as evidence of strong leadership qualities, involvement in the community, character, integrity and an exceptional capacity for making a difference. To be considered for the UMass Lowell Chancellor's Merit Scholarship, applicants must be a Massachusetts resident and have at least a 4.0 GPA and an SAT score of 1540 or higher (evidence based reading and writing and math) or an ACT score of 34.

  • Award: Annual award of full tuition, mandatory fees, room and board.
  • Application is required. Admissions and scholarship applications must be received by the Early Action Deadline, November 6 to be considered for this scholarship. Students are notified via their admissions acceptance packet.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.25, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Commonwealth Scholarship

UMass Lowell is proud to award the Commonwealth Scholarship, to a select number of our top 5% of academically qualified admitted freshmen who are permanent residents of Massachusetts.

  • Award: Annual award of full tuition and mandatory fees.
  • Application not required. Admissions application must be received by the Early Action Deadline, November 1 to be considered for this scholarship. Students are notified via their admissions acceptance packet.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.25, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Tsongas Scholarship

UMass Lowell is proud to award the Tsongas Scholarship to two of our most academically qualified admitted freshmen who are Massachusetts residents and graduates of Lowell High School.

  • Award: Two annual awards of full tuition, fees and standard room/board, selected by Lowell High School & the UMass Lowell committee.
  • Requirements:
    • Open to Massachusetts residents and Lowell High School graduates
    • Application solicited by the Headmaster of Lowell High School
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Dean's Scholarship Program

This scholarship is limited to a select number of the top 10% of our admitted freshmen to attract and reward those with high academic achievements.

  • Award: Annual award up to half mandatory fees (Estimated $7,400.)
  • Application not required. Admissions application must be received by the Early Action Deadline, November 1 to be considered for this scholarship. Students are notified via their admissions acceptance packet.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Non-Massachusetts Residents 

First-time, first-year domestic out-of state, International, New England Regional and/or Southern New Hampshire proximity residency undergraduate applicants are eligible to be considered for the scholarships listed in this section.

Out of State and International Scholarships

UMass Lowell offers a variety of scholarships to our first time, first year, undergraduate out of state and international applicants of exceptional merit.

  • Awards: Scholarship amounts range from $10,000 to $20,000
  • The type and amounts of the award depends on a comprehensive evaluation of each year's applicant pool.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 - 3.2, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

New England Regional and Proximity Scholarships

In addition to the tuition discount program, UMass Lowell offers a variety of scholarships to our first time, first year, New England Regional and Proximity eligible applicants of exceptional merit.

  • Award: Scholarship amounts range from $2,500 to $10,000
  • The type and amounts of the award depends on a comprehensive evaluation of each year's applicant pool.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 - 3.2, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Open to All Residencies  

Raise.me Scholarship Program

UMass Lowell is a proud participant in the Raise.me program. Raise.me is a new site where any high school student in 9, 10, 11 or 12th grade, in the US, can automatically earn scholarship money for individual achievements all throughout high school. For more information please visit www.raise.me/join/uml. Scholarship amounts vary.

  • Requirements:
  • Students must register their Raise.me profile on or before November 1 of their senior year.
  • Students must have a completed admissions application on file by the UMass Lowell admissions application deadline date and must be accepted into the University.
  • If a student is offered another UMass Lowell merit scholarship, the university will award either the Raise.me scholarship or the UMass Lowell merit scholarship, whichever is of greater value.

WACE National Co-Op Scholarship Program

UMass Lowell is proud to partner with WACE to offer scholarships to incoming freshmen interested in cooperative education.

  • Award: Up to sixteen $6,500 scholarships available to students who are chosen based on their application to the WACE Scholarship program.
  • Requirements:

    • November 1 for Early Action Applicants
    • February 1 for Regular Decision Applicants

FIRST Robotics Competition

UMass Lowell has partnered with the USFIRST to offer an annual scholarship for students who have participated in the FIRST Robotics program.

  • Award:Scholarship is worth up to half the amount of INSTATE mandatory fees (est $7,154)

Please Note: The scholarships listed on this page are not available to students enrolled in the Division of Online and Continuing Education (DOCE) and do not apply to DOCE courses. Scholarship information is subject to change depending on funding and quality of applicant pool.
