Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

2018-2019 Merit Scholarships

Massachusetts Residents 

First-time, first-year, in-state undergraduate applicants are eligible to be considered for the scholarships listed in this section.

Chancellor's Scholarship

UMass Lowell is proud to award the Chancellor's Scholarship, to a select number of our top 5 percent of academically qualified admitted freshmen who are permanent residents of Massachusetts.

  • Awards: Annual award of full tuition and mandatory fees.
  • Application not required. Admissions application must be received by the Early Action Deadline to be considered for this scholarship. Students are notified via their admissions acceptance packet.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.25, full-time status, maximum of eight consecutive semesters.

Tsongas Scholarship

UMass Lowell is proud to award the Tsongas Scholarship to two of our most academically qualified admitted freshmen who are Massachusetts residents and graduates of Lowell High School.

  • Awards: Two annual awards of full tuition, fees and standard room/board, selected by Lowell High School & the UMass Lowell committee. 
  • Requirements:
    • Open to Massachusetts residents and Lowell High School graduates
    • Application solicited by the Headmaster of Lowell High School
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, full-time status, maximum of eight consecutive semesters.

Dean's Scholarship Program

This scholarship is limited to a select number of the top 10 percent of our admitted freshmen to attract and reward those with high academic achievements.

  • Awards: Annual award up to half mandatory fees.
  • Application not required. Admissions application must be received by the Early Action Deadline to be considered for this scholarship. Students are notified via their admissions acceptance packet.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters.

Non-Massachusetts Residents 

First-time, first-year domestic, out-of-state, international and New England Regional residency undergraduate applicants are eligible to be considered for the scholarships listed in this section.

UMass Lowell Legacy Scholarship- "Celebrate the Past, Build the Future"

UMass Lowell offers the Legacy Scholarship to children and/or grandchildren of UMass Lowell graduates who live out of state. UMass Lowell offers this opportunity because we believe it is important to celebrate the past accomplishments to build the future for the next generation of River Hawks!

  • Awards: Scholarship amounts range from $5,000 to $10,000
  • Scholarship application must be received by March 1
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, full-time status, maximum of 8 consecutive semesters, cannot be combined with other university merit scholarships

Apply for UMass Lowell Legacy Scholarship

Out-of-State & International Scholarships

UMass Lowell offers a variety of scholarships to our first-time, first-year, undergraduate out-of-state and international applicants of exceptional merit.

  • Awards: Scholarship amounts range from $10,000 to $20,000
  • The type and amounts of the award depends on a comprehensive evaluation of each year's applicant pool.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 - 3.2, full-time status, maximum of eight consecutive semesters.

New England Regional Scholarships

In addition to the tuition discount program, UMass Lowell offers a variety of scholarships to our first-time, first-year, New England Regional eligible applicants of exceptional merit.

  • Awards: Scholarship amounts range from $2,500 to $10,000
  • The type and amounts of the award depends on a comprehensive evaluation of each year's applicant pool.
  • Renewal requirements: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 - 3.2, full-time status, maximum of eight consecutive semesters.

Open to All Residencies  

RaiseMe Scholarship Program

UMass Lowell is a proud participant in the RaiseMe program. RaiseMe is a new site where any high school student in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12, in the U.S., can automatically earn scholarship money for individual achievements all throughout high school. For more information please visit the UMass Lowell and RaiseMe website. Scholarship amounts vary.

Requirements:

  • Students must register their RaiseMe profile on or before Nov. 1 of their senior year.
  • Students must have a completed admissions application on file by the UMass Lowell admissions application deadline date and must be accepted into the University.
  • If a student is offered another UMass Lowell merit scholarship, the university will award either the RaiseMe scholarship or the UMass Lowell merit scholarship, whichever is of greater value.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Scholarship

Scholarship requires a nomination from a teacher, principal, etc. Nominations are due by the following dates:

  • Early Action: November 15
  • Regular Decision: February 15

Additionally, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Female
  • Be a first generation to college student
  • Identify as a member of an ethnic minority group

Additionally, the students:

  • Must have completed at least one PLTW course (strong preference will be given to students who have completed three PLTW courses)
  • Be nominated by a high school STEM teacher, guidance counselor or principal (one nomination per school, please.)
  • Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0
  • Must apply for admission to a STEM program at UMass Lowell by the application deadline: Early Action- November 1, Regular Decision: February 1
  • The scholarship has a maximum award value of $5,000 for Massachusetts residents and $10,000 for out-of-state residents. It is renewable for four years of undergraduate study, provided a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained.

FIRST Robotics Competition

UMass Lowell has partnered with the USFIRST to offer an annual scholarship for students who have participated in the FIRST Robotics program.

Please Note: The scholarships listed on this page are not available to students enrolled in Graduate, Online and Continuing Studies programs and do not apply to its courses. Scholarship information is subject to change depending on funding and quality of applicant pool.
