Week Events and Challenges

Social Justice Week kicks off ongoing education throughout the semester. Every day is a social justice opportunity day. Events are sponsored by the University's community: office of Multicultural Affairs, Asian American Center for Excellence and Engagement, River Hawk Scholars Academy, Disability Services office and the office of Student Life and Wellbeing.

Beginning of Social Justice exploration challenge - topics, reflections and resources are different each day.

Monday, February 12, 2024, Movie Monday

  • Social Justice Week: Documentary and Discussion with AACEE Documentary - The Donut King
    When: Noon
    Location: Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement (AACEE) Center, Cumnock Hall, 2nd floor
    • Join the Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement for a Documentary and Discussion.
    • Film Description: An immigrant story with a (glazed) twist, The Donut King follows the journey of Cambodian refugee Ted Ngoy, who arrived in California in the 1970s and, through a mixture of diligence and luck, built a multi-million-dollar donut empire up and down the West Coast.

  • Social Justice Week: Documentary and Discussion with Disability Services Documentary - Rising Phoenix
    When: 2- 5 p.m.
    Location: Social Justice Center, University Crossing (UCC) 370.
    • Join the Office of Disability Services for a Documentary and Discussion! Rising Phoenix reflects on the Paralympic Games and examine how they impact a global understanding of disability, diversity, and excellence.

Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Living Your Truth

  • The First Gen Experience

    • Take part in a fruitful conversation with River Hawk Scholars Academy unpacking the First Gen Experience at UMass Lowell.
  • For the Culture Social Hour: Spotlight on Queer Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) voices
    5-6:30 p.m.,
    Location: Social Justice Center – University Crossing (UCC) 370
    • Join the Black Cohort of Rising 360 as they discuss the importance of Queer BIPOC voices.

  • Self-Care, while doing the work
    When: Noon
    Location: Social Justice Center, University Crossing (UCC) 370.
    • A workshop unpacking advocacy fatigue and how to combat burnout through self-care.

  • Pronoun Primer Tabling
    When: 2 p.m.
    Location: Cumnock Hall table
    • Join the LGBTQ+ Resource Center during Tabling to learn more about pronouns and the importance of usage.

  • Finding Your Resources: Student Life & Wellbeing Presents "Manual”

    • Drop in to reflect on a topic you have been learning. Pick up a free journal and do some prompt writing with us.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Topics

Engage in continued learning of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice topics through our 7-day challenge that includes a wide array of resources. Within each day are some curated resources but not all that is out there. We hope this spark you to continue learning more about these topics.
