PhD in Psychology Overview

UMass Lowell’s Ph.D. in Psychology degree program provides an immersive and hands-on research experience. Our program is designed to equip students with both a strong foundation in psychological science and the tools to apply psychological theories to real-world challenges.

As a doctoral student, you’ll receive specialized training in high-demand areas sought by employers, such as advanced quantitative and qualitative methods, behavior analysis, epigenetics, psychophysiology, narrative methods, grant and policy writing and meta-analytic approaches. You’ll also have the chance to work alongside renowned faculty who are not only experts in their fields, but also passionate about mentoring the next generation of scholars.

Please note: This is not a clinical or counseling psychology program and is not suitable for students who wish to be trained in psychotherapy.

What Our Students Are Saying

"I am most grateful for the wonderful mentorship from my advisors and the invaluable research training I have obtained across multiple settings. I appreciate the guidance and encouragement from the faculty in building community partnerships. This allows me to apply my coursework (e.g., quantitative skills and developmental theory) outside the classroom and build strong connections with the local community. Additionally, I will always cherish the support and friendships I have found from the other students in the program."
