What is the difference between an endowed scholarship and an internal scholarship in the Riverhawk Scholarship Portal?
An endowed scholarship, also know as donor-sponsored scholarship, is a permanent scholarship fund donated to UMass Lowell (UML) by an individual, family, organization, or foundation. Endowed scholarships are permanent meaning the scholarship donation is invested and the interest from the account can support student scholarships year after year. Endowed scholarships usually have specific criteria set by the donor, such as major, academic achievement, financial need, background, or career goals.
Internal scholarships are one time donations made for a specific year. The award would only be available in the future if additional donations are received. They often have specific criteria set by the donor, such as major, academic achievement, financial need, background, or career goals.
As a student which type you receive does not impact how you receive the funds. Both type of scholarships do not require to be repaid and both types require the student to write a thank you letter to the donor.
