Undergraduate

Matriculated undergraduate degree students who entered the University of Massachusetts Lowell as freshmen or transfer students are permitted a maximum of 15 credits of course deletions/repeated coursework to remove grades of C- or below from the cumulative grade-point average. The original grade will remain on the transcript accompanied by an exclusion notation. Students who retake a course in which they earned a C- or below and receive a higher grade will have the previous grade automatically deleted during academic standing, provided they have not reached the maximum number of grade deletions allowed.

Students who matriculated in an undergraduate certificate program are permitted a maximum of 3 credits for course deletions/ repeated coursework to remove grades of C- or below from their cumulative grade-point averages. The original grade will remain on the transcript accompanied by an exclusion notation.

To request a course deletion, complete the Course Deletion Form, located in the Registration and Classes section of the Academic Forms page.

Important Notes

  • Course deletions are permanent and cannot be reversed.
  • Only grades of C- or lower may be deleted.
  • Course deletion does not change academic standing.
  • Course deletion does not change satisfactory academic progress (SAP) for financial aid.
  • The original course and grade remains on the transcript with an exclusion notation.
  • Required courses must be repeated for credit.
  • If you have concerns about completing your program, contact your academic advisor before submitting a request.

Graduate Grade Exclusion

Matriculated graduate students are permitted one grade exclusion per degree sought. The exclusion may remove one course’s grade and credits from the cumulative grade-point average, including a grade for a repeated course. The original grade and course will remain on the transcript accompanied by an exclusion notation.

To request a grade exclusion, complete a Graduate Academic Petition, located in the Forms for Graduate Students Only section of the Academic Forms page. Include the course number, title, semester taken, and a detailed explanation of the request. The petition must be approved by the student’s Graduate Coordinator.
