The transportation team would like welcome all new and returning, students, staff and faculty to campus. Over the past several months the team in Transportation has been working to improve our service and we are excited to announce the following changes for the 2017-2018 academic year.
The Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA) and Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA) regional transportation program for the free bus rides for UMass Lowell students and employees will continue throughout Fall and Spring semester! This is a great alternative to get to campus if you live in the Lowell area, and Merrimack Valley. All you need is a current active UCARD, and you can scan onto the bus. Learn more about the LRTA and MVRTA free bus rides program.
In addition, we have partnered with the LRTA and they have created a new line (line 20) that will service the ICC weekdays. From 7 to 11 a.m. LRTA buses will run between the ICC, University Crossing, North Campus and Downtown Lowell. After 11 a.m. the transportation services will resume service with the regular UMass Lowell Buses. This program will assist in handling the increased demand of students we see in the morning hours trying to get from the ICC to North Campus.
Starting Tuesday October 10, Transportation Services is excited to announce that we have added 2 large buses to our day-time orange line service. These buses will travel between North Campus, the Moody/Merrimack St apartments stop on Aiken St, and the University Suites bus stop.
Students and Staff who are looking to get to Wannalancit Mills can utilize the University Suites bus stop on Aiken or the East Campus Bus stop across from Fox Hall. During the day, Wannalancit Mills will be on-call during our night and weekend service.
East Meadow Lane apartments are no longer part of university housing. Therefore Transportation Services will no longer service the East Meadow Lane apartments. Students in the area can easily connect to North Campus via the LRTA.
Purple Line and Ayotte Garage:
Parking for Freshmen and Sophomore North Campus majors has been relocated to 1001 Pawtucket Blvd. The Purple Line will go from 1001 Pawtucket Blvd to North Campus, starting the first day of Fall 2017 classes. Purple Line will no longer go to East Campus University Suites or Ayotte Garage.
Road Construction Updates:
Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be closing the canal bridge on Market Street over the Western Canal, starting September 18, 2017. This closure will allow the state to rebuild the bridge, and is expected to reopen in the Fall of 2018. During this time shuttles will be detoured that need to travel in this area.
Broadway St. canal bridge remains closed due to construction. The bridge was expected to open Fall 2017. Until it opens buses will be detoured to Middlesex Street to get to and from South Campus. Note: buses are not permitted to travel over the Pawtucket Street canal due to weight restrictions on that bridge.
