National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC)
Students prepare for competition in the country’s largest college-level cyber defense competition. Teams detect and respond to outside threats, maintain availability of existing services such as mail servers and web servers, respond to business requests such as the addition or removal of additional services, all while balancing security needs against business needs. For more information, join the UMass Lowell Cyber Security Club or contact Prof. Sashank Narain by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
This campus-wide program engages students in creative problem solving, innovation and entrepreneurship. Seminars and workshops are held throughout the year, culminating in the Idea Challenge, which gives out $50,000 for category winners to further their ideas into products and even companies. Previous winners include invisaWear, launched by computer science and electrical engineering alumna Rajia Aziz '16 while she was a student. For more information, contact Prof. Tom Wilkes, KCS DifferenceMaker Fellow by email: email@example.com, and see the Rist DifferenceMaker Institute website.
Climate Change Initiative (CCI)
In the World Climate and Climate Action Simulations, students take on the roles of negotiators who are tasked with developing an international agreement that addresses climate change. Their decisions are entered into an interactive computer model that provides immediate feedback on the climate (C-ROADS) and energy (En-ROADS) impacts of their decisions.
William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition
Each year UMass Lowell students participate in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, the preeminent mathematics competition for undergraduate college students in the United States and Canada. Many Putnam Fellows have gone on to become distinguished researchers in mathematics and other fields. Students often prepare for the competition by enrolling in Mathematical Problem Solving, which is offered each fall. For more information, contact Prof. Kenneth Levasseur, by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
