The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Industrial Engineering.
The Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering Major
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Mechanical Engineering provides its graduates with a very comprehensive engineering education. A major strength of the program is its emphasis on hands-on experience. Graduates are fully prepared to pursue work in industry, or to continue on for graduate education in engineering, business, and medicine. The curriculum is designed to graduate engineers who can apply fundamental principles of mechanical engineering with competence and sensitivity to the needs of society. To achieve this goal, students follow a sequence of courses beginning with basic mathematics and science, followed by their application to courses in engineering science and engineering design. Relevant clusters of studies in the humanities and social sciences are included within the context of engineering education.

Industrial Engineering Major
Industrial Engineering, as defined by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, “is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.”
The Industrial Engineering program focuses on manufacturing, with an emphasis on automation. The program of study is designed for graduates to enter the workforce in manufacturing, whether from a design and implementation perspective or control and managerial perspective. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Industrial Engineering will facilitate advanced study in engineering (MSIE or Ph. D. in IE, or other engineering areas), or professional degree pursuits such as business or law. To achieve this goal, students follow a sequence of courses beginning with basic mathematics and science, followed by their application to courses in engineering science and engineering design. Relevant clusters of studies in the humanities and social sciences are included within the context of engineering education.

Minor in Business Administration for Mechanical Engineering
The minor in Business Administration for Mechanical Engineering is a popular minor for Mechanical Engineering students. Many mechanical engineers are engaged in the enterprise of business. Therefore, a Minor in Business Administration for Mechanical Engineering often is a valuable credential.
BACHELOR'S-TO-MASTER'S
The department offers undergraduate students the opportunity to continue their studies in a combined BSE/MSE program. Students with at least a 3.000 cumulative g.p.a. are eligible to apply to the master’s program through a streamlined admissions process.
