The academic program in Nuclear Science and Engineering (NS&E) education at UMass Lowell was established in the 1960’s. UMass Lowell offers Bachelor's, Master's, and a Doctorate programs with a focus in NS&E. The Nuclear Engineering track resides in the Francis College of Engineering and the Radiological Science track resides in the College of Sciences.

More Education and Training Available

In addition to the standard academic programs in nuclear engineering and radiological science, UMass Lowell delivers the Nuclear Engineering Education and Training (NEET) program. This is a customizable, high intensity, program designed to deliver core material in nuclear education. It includes lectures and hands-on exercises in: reactor physics, reactor kinetics, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear safety, nuclear security, nuclear nonproliferation, and nuclear energy sustainability. One of the recent NEET program was delivered to students from King Abdualaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah.

Undergraduate Nuclear Science and Engineering Options

Initial ABET accreditation of the four-year, undergraduate Nuclear Engineering Program was achieved in 1980. In 1995, a decision was made by the University to place the four-year Nuclear Engineering Program on hiatus. Thus, the Nuclear Engineering Option Program became the only nuclear outlet for students interested in studying nuclear engineering subjects. Currently, UMass Lowell offer undergraduate nuclear engineering and radiological science options as follows:
