If you were admitted to UMass Lowell but not into your first-choice major, you may still have the opportunity to request a major change later on. The information below explains what to expect and the requirements you’ll need to meet.

Engineering - Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Engineering

Students enrolled in a non-engineering major can still seek admission to the Francis College of Engineering by submitting a program change request. If engineering is your goal, completing the key math and science courses early and keeping your Grade Point Average (GPA) strong will help you stay on track.

Criteria and program change information can be found on the Francis College of Engineering Program Changes page.

Nursing - B.S. in Nursing

Enrollment for this program is extremely limited, and applicants must meet all requirements outlined in order to apply. No exceptions will be made. Applications are accepted for fall enrollment only. Applications submitted for the spring semester will be deferred to the fall without notification.

Criteria and application information can be found on the UMass Lowell Nursing Transfer Program page.

Computer Science - B.S. in Computer Science

Students who wish to transfer into the Computer Science major after beginning their studies at UMass Lowell must meet the following internal criteria:

  • Earn a B- or better in Computing I and lab
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.300
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete the degree within a reasonable timeframe
    • Because of the math-intensive nature of the curriculum, courses taken prior to Calculus I do not count toward the Computer Science degree.

Other Majors

Students interested in changing to other majors after starting at UMass Lowell can do so through each program’s change of major process. Most programs require meeting a minimum GPA and completing the appropriate form. You can review each program’s contact information on the Solution Center’s Program Change Page.

Helpful Steps to Guide You:

  • Treat this as a plan, not a guarantee. Meeting the minimum requirements allows you to apply, but admission depends on available space in the program.
  • Get advising early. Work with your academic advisor to map out which prerequisites you need, when to take them, and how to stay on track for graduation.
  • Stay focused on GPA and prerequisites. Strong grades in foundational courses and keeping a solid overall GPA are critical.
  • Understand the timeline trade-offs. Changing majors may extend your time to graduation beyond the standard four years.
  • Be proactive. If you’re interested in switching majors, start thinking about course planning now rather than waiting. Some majors have limited enrollment and seat availability make early planning especially important.
