Severe weather policy

UMass Lowell is committed to the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, staff and visitors. When deciding whether to close the campus due to extreme weather conditions, university officials consider many factors, including the condition of roads and streets on campus and in the surrounding areas, power outages, weather forecasts and other safety factors. University officials also consult with local and state public safety and emergency management agencies to make the most informed decisions possible. We trust that all members of the university community will use their best judgment about travel during inclement weather and communicate with faculty or supervisors about their situations.

The UMass Lowell website is the primary location for all updates on university operations during closures. To receive e-mail or text messages about weather-related cancellations, sign up for alerts. You may also call 978-934-2121 or ext. 4-2121 for information. Cancellations will also be posted on Facebook and Twitter.

Check the River Hawks website for any schedule changes.

When the university has a delayed opening or is closed due to snow on a weekday, the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) and Riverview Fitness Center (RFC) will publicize their hours on the Campus Recreation Center homepage. Please follow Campus Recreation on Twitter to receive updates as they become available. To view more information on Campus Recreation hours, visit the Campus Recreation website.

Campus Transportation Services

For the safety of drivers and passengers, Campus Transportation, including university buses and shuttles, does not operate when the university is closed due to weather conditions. Follow Transportation Services on Facebook for updates.

Fox Dining Commons 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
South Dining Commons 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If the university is closed during the day but opens for night classes, O'Leary Library will open to accommodate scheduled classes in the building but will not be open to the general public.

Parking Bans

In the event of a snow emergency, the university may invoke an on-campus parking ban to allow for plowing of university lots.
