Gender Inclusive Housing

UMass Lowell strives to create an inclusive, supportive environment for all students. As part of this commitment, students can designate their own Housing Assignment Gender while completing their housing application on the Online Housing Portal System. We recognize that the options are not inclusive of all identities, and these designations will be used for housing assignment purposes only. While students are housed with students of the same gender by default, but we have designated rooms on campus as gender inclusive. Students living in a gender inclusive room select to live with a roommate regardless of their gender.

To find out more about Gender Inclusive Housing and how you can secure a room, visit the Office of Residence Life's website!

Name & Gender Designation

Name Changes: At UMass Lowell, students, faculty, and staff can designate a Campus or Preferred Name, which refers to a name that an individual wishes to use that differs from their legal name on legal documents and/or differs from the name that is listed on the individual's original UMass Lowell record that has not been changed legally. To designate a Campus Name, simply complete the online Preferred (Campus) Name Change Form. Class Rosters, the Blackboard LMS System, and university email addresses will reflect the Campus Name and there is the option to have it reflected on one's UCARD as well by contacting UCAPS. However, please note that changing a Campus Name does not guarantee if the preferred name or legal name will be used in physical mailings to home addresses.

Gender Change: Students and employees may request a change of gender designation within UMass Lowell's databases and information systems using the Request for Change to Gender Designation Form. Please note that this request is different from specifying one's gender on Res Life's Online Housing Portal System.
