Healthcare is one of the largest sectors in the U.S. economy, with over 19 million employees according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report (pdf). This fast growing industry expects a 15% growth of employment, or an addition of 2.4 million jobs by 2029 (BLS, 2021). Healthcare workers are at high risk for occupational hazards such as musculoskeletal disorders, needle sticks, and assault. In 2018, approximately 3.9 out of every 100 healthcare workers (Punnett et al., 2020) reported a non-fatal occupational illness or injury. Our research evaluates interventions that address upstream predictors of injuries and illnesses in the healthcare working environment.
