When completing your J-1 program at UMass Lowell, the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) will require the J-1 scholar to complete our End of Program e-form so that we can advise on the necessary steps to end your J-1 program, and to confirm with the ISSO that your program is ending.

If you are ending your J-1 program at UMass Lowell because you are transferring your J-1 SEVIS record to another United States (U.S.) institution, please review our J-1 Transfer webpage for instructions.

Scholars who end their program by or within 15 days from their current DS-2019 expiry date will be permitted a 30-day grace period to remain in the U.S. and ultimately depart. You cannot continue to work or otherwise engage in your J-1 program activities during this grace period. Your SEVIS record will change to “inactive” following the expiry of your grace period, at which point you should have departed the U.S.

If you are in the J-1 Research Scholar or Professor category, you and any J-2 dependents will be subject to the 24 month bar. Please review our J-1 Compliance / Bars webpage for more information. If you are in the J-1 Student Intern category, you must submit a departmental evaluation form (please contact your ISSO advisor with any questions related to your required evaluation).

If you are paid by UMass Lowell, please contact Human Resources (HR) to determine if there are any HR-related formalities you need to complete before ending your program and ultimately departing the U.S.

Scholars who end their program more than 15 days before their current DS-2019 expiry will need to inform the ISSO, through completion of the J-1 End of Program e-form on what date their J-1 program will be ending. With the completion of the e-form, the ISSO can amend your SEVIS record to reflect the new, accurate program end date and issue a new DS-2019 to you reflecting the same.
