Graduate Certificate in Community Music Education

Community Music Education Certificate

The Music Department offers a graduate certificate in Community Music Education.

Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Community Music Education serves two purposes:

  1. As a corollary to our Master of Music Education with Licensure for students wanting to pursue teaching in both formalized and community music settings, and
  2. As a professional development degree for licensed, working teachers who may be interested in cultivating skills in the non-profit sector.

The Certificate program focuses on experiential work, with the coursework designed to support the students' immersive learning through internships. This aspect of the program includes intensive “hands-on” work in professional community music settings. Students are paired with veteran administrators and teachers to experience the various roles necessary to running successful non-profit arts organizations. Upon completion of the program, students will be credentialed in a comprehensive set of teaching and administrative skills, which they may apply to any professional context.
