Community engagement is the process of working collaboratively with groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the well-being of those people. Community engaged scholarship can go by many names: engaged research, public impact research, research-practice partnerships, applied, knowledge translation, use-inspired research, coproduction (source: adapted from Ozer, E. presentation, February 5, 2025, UMass Lowell).

There are many exemplary universities that have adopted definitions. For example, Michigan State University's Office of University Outreach and Engagement defines community-engaged scholarship as “a form of scholarship that cuts across teaching, research [and creative activities], and service. It involves generating, transmitting and applying knowledge for the direct benefit of external audiences in ways that are consistent with university and unit missions."
