Why do we need to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

Windows 7 is 9 years old and will reach End Of Life on January 14, 2020. This means that Microsoft will no longer be providing important bug fixes or security patches leaving Windows 7 computers more susceptible to malware. All UMass computer assets that are connected to the campus network need to be upgraded.

What do I do if I NEED Windows 7?

If you have a computer that needs to run Windows 7 due to software or external hardware requirements, please email: Zachary_Thistle@uml.edu to discuss a remediation plan.

What about my data?

The upgrade to Windows 10 retains your settings and data but we recommend that before you upgrade that you backup your data with OneDrive for Business.

Information on OneDrive can be found on the OneDrive for Business webpage.

If you would like assistance backing up your data, please contact the Tech Services desk at 978-934-4357 or email: help@uml.edu.

When should I upgrade?

We recommend upgrading at the end of the workday. The process can take several hours so it’s best to have it run when you don’t need to be using the computer.

What happens if I do not upgrade my computer?

Your computer will be scheduled for remote upgrade beginning as early as January 15, 2020.
