Whether you are looking to initiate your account, need assistance accessing your current account, or want to learn more about how to manage your account settings, we hope you can find answers to your questions here!

Once enrolled in Microsoft Authenticator, you can navigate to the Password Reset Portal to recover your account at any time.

  1. Once you are in the portal, in the Enter password screen, select Forgot my password.
  2. In the Get back into your account screen, type your UMass Lowell (UML) email address, and then prove you aren't a robot by entering the characters you see on the screen, and then select Next.
  3. On the next screen, select one of the methods on the left to verify your identity, then follow the prompts.
    Note: You may be required to use more than one method.
  4. Enter your new password, then confirm it below.

  1. Go to the Microsoft My Account Overview page. If you’re not already signed in, sign in with your UMass Lowell (UML) credentials.
  2. From the left menu, select Change Password.
  3. On the Change your password page, enter your new password, then confirm it.
  4. Select Submit.

Undergrad Students: All new students will receive instructions to setup their account in the Admissions Portal. If you have trouble accessing the portal, please use the "Forgot Your Password" link on the login page. If you are still unable to login to the Admissions Portal, please contact Undergrad Admissions at 978-934-3931

Graduate /Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Students and Faculty / Staff: Please call TechServices at 978-934-4357 to have a temporary password issued, and then follow the instructions below.


Claiming Instructions:

  1. After receiving your temporary password, navigate to the My Account Overview page.
  2. You will be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator (iOS and Android) for Multi-factor authentication (MFA). Follow the instructions in the wizard to enroll.
  3. Once you have completed enrolling in MFA, you will be asked to set a new password
    • Minimum password length is 16 characters
    • Passwords must include at least 3 of the following:
      1. One upper-case character
      2. One lower-case character
      3. One special character (i.e. ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /)
      4. One numeric character
  4. After setting a new password, your account will be ready for use.

How long after I graduate do I get to keep my account for?

Your account will remain active for two years after graduation from UMass Lowell.

How do I reset my own password?

  1. Go to the Microsoft My Account Overview page. If you’re not already signed in, sign in with your UMass Lowell credentials. 
  2. From the left menu, select Change Password
  3. On the Change your password page, enter your new password, then confirm it. 
  4. Select Submit

How do I setup Microsoft Authenticator for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

What if I get a new phone?

If you have a new phone you will need to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new phone. Please download the authenticator app and follow these steps:  
If your app is already installed make sure there is no current UMASS LOWELL account listed. If there is, click the UMASS LOWELL account listed and then click the settings gear icon and remove the account before continuing to the next steps.
  1. If you know your UMass Lowell Password and have the same phone number, you can navigate to aka.ms/mfasetup.  
  2. When authenticator prompts, you will not get a number sent to your app so please select “Sign in another way” and select the SMS option. This will send you a text message code to sign in instead of using the app. 
  3. Once here find the sign in method that says “Microsoft Authenticator” beside it will show your old phones model EX: “iPhone 15” please press the delete button next to it. 
  4. To add your new phone click “Add sign in method.” 
  5. Select Microsoft Authenticator and follow the prompts.

How often do I have to reset my password?

Passwords never expire. You do not have to reset your password periodically anymore! Thanks to Microsoft Authenticator, MFA keeps your account secure!

What are the password requirements?

Minimum password length if 16 characters, and must include at least 3 of the following:
  • One uppercase character
  • One lowercase character
  • One special character (i.e. ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /)
  • One numeric character

What if my name/username is spelled incorrectly or I want to change my name?

UMass Lowell keeps multiple names on record for students and faculty/staff members. 
When your email address is updated, the previous email address is kept as an alias. You will need to use your new email address to log into your account, but any emails sent to your previous email address will still be delivered. 
You may experience sign-in issues for 24-48 hours after changing your email address will systems sync between the university and Microsoft.
