Prof. Burton A. Segall is an experienced researcher, consultant and teacher whose research has focused on chromium recycling for tanning industries, removal of gasoline hydrocarbons from contaminated fine_grained soils using electrochemical techniques, solid waste recycling technology and biotechnology. The large number of hydrocarbon_contaminated sites in the Northeast results from a century of coal gas production. Recently, he investigated the incorporation of coal tar and cyanide complexed oxide box wastes into cold_mix road paving material.
His past research was funded by the State of Massachusetts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and local industry/utilities. He was a Co_principal Investigator on a USEPA_sponsored project on "Transport and In_Situ Treatment of Gasoline Hydrocarbons in Fine_Grained Soils". Segall’s 25 years of engineering experience includes service as an engineer at Hazen Sawyer Engineers (1965_1969), U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania, East Africa (1961_1963). He was also the Town Engineer of Dunstable, Massachusetts from 1977-1990.
Segall retired in 2002 and lives in Chatham on Cape Cod. He served as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering (1989_1992). He holds a Ph.D. (1971) in Environmental Engineering from New York University; M.P.H. (1965) in Public Health, M.S.S.E. (1964) in Sanitary Engineering from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and B.C.E. (1957) in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts. He is a member of several honor societies including Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon.
