Concentration RequirementsECON.2010, ECON.2020 and one approved course in Mathematics or another department
Note: None of the above courses can be used to satisfy two different requirements. MATH.3050 and MATH.5030 cannot both be used to satisfy the two-courses Analysis requirement.

The following courses cannot be used as Electives:

No more than 60 Math credits can be counted toward the degree.

Writing Requirement

ENGL.2290 (Essay Writing for Non-English Majors). If a student has completed other courses with substantial writing requirements, he/she can petition to have that work satisfy the mathematics writing requirement.

Students with a joint major in Computer Science should take ENGL.2200 (Oral and Written Communication for CS Majors) rather than ENGL.2290

General Education Electives (at least 6 courses)

3 in Arts & Humanities (AH) and 3 in Social Sciences (SS); one course must satisfy the Diversity (D) requirement and one the Ethics (E) requirement. No more than two courses from a single department can be used to satisfy these Gen Ed requirements. Math/Science Gen Ed requirements are fulfilled by the major’s courses.

Advice to Students

If you plan any deviations from this sample program of study, use an Academic Petition signed by the Mathematics Department Chair to receive written permission. Keep a copy of any signed Academic Petitions for your own files.

Bachelor of Science Requirements

A minimum of 74 credits and 20 courses from the offerings of science and mathematics; four science lecture courses with co-requisite labs, including a two semester sequence in a department other than Mathematics—COMP.1010 (Computing I), COMP.1020 (Computing II), MATH.2310/2320 (Calculus III & Math Lab I) and MATH.2360 (Engineering Diff. Eqns) qualify. If you use math courses to fulfill lab science requirements, you will have to take additional science elective courses to satisfy the requirement of 74 science credits. The following courses CANNOT be used to fulfill science requirements: CHEM.1010, CHEM.1110, CHEM.1130, CHEM.1120, CHEM.1140, ATMO.1020, ATMO.1200, ATMO.1410, ENVI.1010, ENVI.1020, ENVI.1150, GEOL.1010, COMP.1110, COMP.1130, COMP.1140, COMP.1150, COMP.2110, PHYS.1210, PHYS.1210, RADI.1010, RADI.1020
