Application / Decision FAQ

We have outlined the most common questions about deferrals and waitlist status to help you and your family understand the admissions process:

Can I talk to you about my application?

If you would like to talk directly to an admissions counselor about your application, please feel free to call the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 978-934-3931 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What can I do to improve my application?

We will gladly accept any additional term grades or test scores until February 1.

Is there a specific reason I was deferred or waitlisted?

This year, we received a record number of qualified applications. Typically students who gained admission during Early-Action, met the profile of our incoming class for the previous year. Last year our average GPA was a 3.66 and our average SAT was 1239. Admissions decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and there are various factors that can influence our decision. An admissions staff member will be happy to help answer any questions you may have.

What are the chances of a student being accepted after being deferred/waitlisted?

The chances change each year depending on the strength of the applicant pool. However, the fact that a student applied for Early-Action and was deferred to Regular Decision will certainly be taken into consideration during evaluation.

When will I find out about regular decision if I was deferred?

All decision letters will be sent out mid-March.

When will I find out about my status on the wait list?

Waitlisted students should first notify us that they would like to accept a spot on our wait list by completing our waitlist response form on your applicant portal.

Students who choose to remain on the waitlist will be notified no later than mid-June regarding their status.

Can I come in for an interview?

The UMass Lowell Admissions Office does not conduct evaluative interviews as part of the application process. If you would like to speak with an admissions counselor about your application, please call the Admissions Office at 978-934-3931 to schedule an appointment.

Will a deferral have any impact on my financial aid?

No, the need based financial aid process is separate from the admission process. The priority deadline for financial aid is March 1. If you have questions about the financial aid process, please visit the Solution Center for information. If you have any additional questions, please contact us by email at: admissions@uml.edu.
