Internships

UMass Lowell promotes experiential learning and encourages students to gain valuable experience through internships, co-ops, service learning and volunteer opportunities. In addition to their course work, art majors are required to complete an internship (120 hours/3 credits). The internship is the first step on a student’s professional path. With the help of their internship faculty adviser, students should secure an internship that is relevant to their concentration and will help them launch their careers in art or design.

The federal government's Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) places limitations on unpaid internships. Students and employers are encouraged to read the UMass Lowell Career Services guidelines

Particularly, it may be helpful to read the FLSA's Test for Unpaid Interns and the six criteria that must be met to be in compliance with the law.
