UMass Lowell promotes experiential learning and encourages students to gain valuable experience through internships, co-ops, service learning and volunteer opportunities. In addition to their course work, art majors are required to complete an internship (120 hours/3 credits). The internship is the first step on a student’s professional path. With the help of their internship faculty adviser, students should secure an internship that is relevant to their concentration and will help them launch their careers in art or design. A binder with internship offers is kept in the Art and Design office. In addition listings and other information can be found by visiting the Art & Design Department’s Internship Lib Guides. For access to internships, current students can get password credentials from their advisor or from the instructor teaching the internship class.
The federal government's Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) places limitations on unpaid internships. Students and employers are encouraged to read the UMass Lowell Career Services guidelines.
Particularly, it may be helpful to read the FLSA's Test for Unpaid Interns and the six criteria that must be met to be in compliance with the law.
