The Fall 2021 Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) Student Success Summit Is August 24-26, 2021

Welcome to UMass Lowell! This three day hybrid (both virtual and in-person) orientation serves the following cohort:

  • new students of color
  • new international students
  • new DC-CAP students
  • Disabilities Services
  • LGBTQ+ students
  • all new first year & transfer students, and more!

OMA Student Success Summit Online Registration


Day 1 - Tuesday, August 24, Creating Your Toolbox for Success

  • 10 a.m.: Welcome & Introduction to the week's activities; meet other students in your cohort.
  • 11 a.m.: Navigating UML as River Hawks - Student Panel:  Hear from current students on how they've maximized & successfully mastered their time on campus including the ins-and-outs of navigating campus, how to talk to faculty, and more.
  • 11 a.m.: ISSO Immigration Clearance Session (Mandatory for International Students) - All new international students will be checked in and cleared for their SEVIS requirements. Maintaining visa status, travel, employment, and other important topics will be covered.
  • Noon: Advising and Tutoring (undergraduates) - Hear from advisors, questions about class registration, the academic calendar, majors/minors and more will be discussed!
  • Noon: Graduate Student Welcome (grads) from the Graduate Admissions Office
  • 1 p.m.: Lunch with virtual campus tour
  • 4-6 p.m.: In-Person; River Hawk Nation Activities (East Campus Turf Fields)

Day 2: Wednesday, August 25, Strategies for Success Inside the Classroom

  • 10 a.m.: Classroom Etiquette - What is a syllabus, what are the unspoken classroom rules and how do I effectively use office hours? These questions & more are answered as you gain insight on what helps students succeed.
  • 11 a.m.: Demystifying Your Class Lecture - UML faculty share their insights on classroom structure and common expectations for the fall 2021 semester.
  • Noon: Virtual Learning Workshop: Remote learning is a bit different than in-person learning.  Learn tips & strategies to navigate effectively on both platforms including hybrid classes.
  • 1 p.m.: Lunch and It's Never too Early to Career Plan - Now that you understand your major, let's start working towards achieving your long-term career goals!
  • 3-6 p.m.: New Graduate Student Orientation (grads) from the Graduate Admissions Office
  • 4-6 p.m.: In-Person; River Hawk Nation Activities (East Campus Turf Fields) 

Day 3 - Thursday, August 26, Thriving at UMass Lowell

  • 10 a.m.: Student Life: Oh, the Possibilities! - What's a typical day life as a River Hawk? Hear how students have engaged in their community in so many ways while finding their 'niche' and community at UMass Lowell.
  • 11 a.m.: Budgeting Basics Workshop - Build a realistic and lasting budget and learn financial strategies from our Money Mentors (current students) & our Financial Aid office.
  • Noon: Staying Healthy & Thriving - Carving time to prioritize health & wellbeing gives us much more than great grades but also energy and a sense of accomplishment in other dimensions of our lives. Learn about how you can balance a busy schedule with staying motivated, replenished, and ready to meet the semester's challenges.
  • 1 p.m.: Lunch and Let's Move! Campus Recreation is so much more than working out! Bike shares, boathouse, hiking, Zumba, folk dancing, and surfing at Cape Cod trips - who knew all the possibilities?
  • 4-6 p.m.: In-Person; River Hawk Nation Activities (East Campus Turf Fields)
