LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell’s graduate programs in business, education and engineering are among the top in the nation, according to new rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.
The 2016 U.S. News & World Report Top Graduate Schools ranking surveyed more than 1,900 programs and thousands of academics and professionals at public and private institutions across the nation.
The publication’s annual rankings are considered among the most influential for prospective students who are selecting a graduate program. Graduate rankings are issued by academic category.
UMass Lowell’s new national rankings are:
- Manning School of Business, No. 86 among all part-time MBA programs in the country;
- Francis College of Engineering, No. 117 overall among graduate engineering schools, with the college’s electrical engineering (No. 123) and mechanical engineering (No. 128) programs also recognized;
- Graduate School of Education, No. 104 among schools in that category.
UMass Lowell graduate programs in fields that were not part of today’s rankings were highly rated in the most recent surveys of those areas by U.S. News & World Report. Those rankings include:
- UMass Lowell’s online MBA (No. 97) and other online graduate business programs (No. 78);
- Online graduate degree in education, No. 68;
- Physical therapy, No. 99;
- Physics, No. 131;
- Chemistry, No. 148.
Since fall 2007, UMass Lowell’s graduate enrollment has grown by approximately 50 percent to 4,198 students.
The high marks for its graduate programs reflect UMass Lowell’s strength in U.S. News & World Report’s overall ranking, where the university is one of only six institutions in the country to advance its standings every year since 2010. UMass Lowell’s 27-spot climb over that five-year period to No. 156 is among the fastest in the nation. The university is also ranked among the top 84 public institutions in the United States.
“These new rankings are another example of how UMass Lowell’s reputation for quality is expanding on a national level and they add value to what is already a highly regarded graduate degree,” said UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan.
In a separate survey released yesterday, the 2015 Best for Vets: Business Schools, UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business was named as one of the top choices in the nation for veterans by the Military Times.
UMass Lowell is the top business school in Massachusetts among both public and private institutions, according to the Military Times, and No. 42 in the United States.
Other independent surveys, such as those by PayScale.com, rank UMass Lowell highly for graduates’ return on investment and starting and mid-career salaries.
