About the Department of World Languages & Cultures

Trafalgar-Square-square

Each of the texts featured in Canal is a product of the academic environment cultivated by the Department of World Languages & Cultures. Whether they originated from specific assignments in our classrooms or applied the strategies taught in our language courses, the writing in each issue reflects our commitment to encouraging original research and self-expression in the languages we teach.

The Department of World Languages & Cultures, in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, offers a B.A. in Modern Languages as well as several minors related to the study of various languages the cultures that they are intertwined with.

Developing skills in different languages allows our students to deepen their understanding of the world while also opening doors within their professional careers. One of the ways in which students are able to explore these opportunities is through Study Abroad programs, which can be for a year, a semester, and a summer or a winter session. It is also possible to complete an internship abroad, as UMass Lowell has established over 100 partnerships with institutions across the globe.
