I think AI is an amazing advancement in human society as a whole. It's incredible that there's the ability to have artificial help with almost any task... though I think there are a bunch of drawbacks. Personally, I'm a very artistic person: I like making and playing music, drawing, writing essays on topics I'm passionate about all just for fun, because I enjoy these activities. AI is the number one opposition to that: it can create music, pictures and replications of drawings, and writings out of thin air. Translation is no exception to this. Even before taking the Translation Seminar class I had translated a few works to and from Spanish and English and I found it enjoyable, as I do with other forms of art.
AI can do translations pretty well and is taking translators' jobs because of that. I think that's the main problem with AI: it abases professions as well as the hobbies that people enjoy doing. In my experience, a translation by ChatGPT turned out really well, but turning it in as my project felt unsatisfying because I didn't get to enjoy the puzzle of finding English synonyms for words and making sure they fit within a certain number of syllables, or a rhyme scheme, or whatever. It was all done for me in a matter of seconds. Our final project was to translate a work from Spanish to English and I chose a couple of songs from Vicente Garcia's album "A la mar". I didn't use AI at all for this assignment, because I genuinely enjoyed translating these songs. In his song Carmesí (Crimson), he sings:
Como vino tu voz / y me dijo que el amor eres tú
Como vino tu olor / a llenarme de inmensa gratitud
Como vino tu piel / para dibujar cariño y querer
Como vino tu olor / y me dijo que el amor eres tú
I found that the word "vino" involves a double entendre, meaning "it came", but also "wine", like the crimson-colored alcoholic beverage. I ended up translating that as:
How your red voice came / And told me that your love is for me
How your scarlet smell came / To fill me with immense gratitude
How your cherry blush came / To draw affection and endearment
How your crimson smell came / And told me that your love is for me
I translated "vino" directly as "came," but also added a red adjective to fulfill the double meaning of "vino." Again I didn't use AI for this assignment, but I don't think it would have picked up on that and, instead, just translated everything word for word.
I find another one reason AI falls flat for translation involved the idea of the "soul" of a work. There's an essay by Walter Benjamin, called "The Task of the Translator," where he brings up the point that the job of a translator is to carry on the soul of a piece of literature, to find the reason the work was written the way it was and keep that intention while translating it into a different language. As a language model, AI can't pick up on human emotions, complex internal textual relationships, or cultural histories and therefore isn't able to carry on the soul of a piece of art (however it might be defined). It can't write with intent or emotion or soul; it can only predict the next word until it completes what it probabilistically determines is the most likely end of a series of linguistic symbols. There's no reasoning behind why AI writes something like it does; its responses are just a series of predictions.
AI also has the tendency to hallucinate while generating responses: it might write something that isn't a translation of the text, whether it be because it wasn't the meaning behind a piece of work, or straight up because those words don't exist in that context, or at all, in the work. Even being graded purely on accuracy, AI would not get full marks. So, in conclusion, AI can't produce an artwork, like a translation, the way a human can.

Yo creo que IA es un acontecimiento asombroso en la sociedad humana. Creo que es increíble que haya la habilidad de tener ayuda con cualquiera tarea... pero pienso que hay desventajas también. En mi caso, soy muy artística: me gusta componer y tocar música, dibujar, escribir ensayos sobre temas que me fascinan para divertirme, porque disfruto de estas actividades. IA es se opone a estas prácticas: puede fabricar música, fotos y dibujos, y escribir ensayos de la nada. La traducción no es una excepción. Aun antes de tomar el Translation Seminar, yo había traducido unas obras a y desde el español. Me había encantado, como me encantan otras formas de arte.
La IA puede hacer traducciones bastante bien y por eso roba los trabajos de traductores. Esto es mi queja principal con IA: rebaja las profesiones y las prácticas artísticas que enriquecen la vida de mucha gente. En mi experiencia, una traducción de ChatGPT salió bien, pero ofrecerlo como mi proyecto me pareció insatisfactorio porque no pude disfrutar del rompecabezas de encontrar sinónimos en inglés o en español, verificar que cupieran las sílabas, o hallar rimas importantes. Todo fue hecho para mí en segundos. El proyecto final para la clase fue traducir una obras del español al inglés (o al revés), y escogí unas canciones del álbum "A la mar" de Vicente García. No usé IA para la tarea, porque disfruté de traducir esas canciones. En su canción "Carmesí", él canta:

Encontré que "vino" tengo dos significados en inglés, como "came" sino también "wine", como la bebida carmesí. La traduje como:

Traduje "vino" literalmente como "came", pero también agregué adjetivos rojos para cumplir ambos significados. No usé IA, pero creo que no habría encontrado este nivel de la canción para, en cambio, traducirla palabra por palabra o frase por frase.
IA fracasa para la traducción literaria por otra razón: el "alma" de una obra. Hay un ensayo de Walter Benjamin, llamado "La tarea del traductor", donde menciona que los traductores deben respetar el alma original de una obra, llevándola a otro idioma. Expresa que es necesario buscar el alma misteriosa de la obra en para después transmitirla en la traducción. Como modelo de lenguaje, IA no puede percatarse de emociones humanas, y entonces no puede percibir o imaginar el alma de una obra de arte; no puede componer con intenciones o emociones o alma, sólo puede predecir la próxima palabra hasta llegar al fin del patrón. No hay una razón por la cual IA escribe algo; sus respuestas sólo son predicciones seguidas.
IA también tiende a alucinar cuando genera respuestas: quizá escriba algo que no sea una traducción porque no corresponda con las intenciones del autor, o porque esas palabras realmente no tienen una equivalencia válida en la obra. Aun en el campo de precisión, IA no recibiría una calificación máxima. En conclusión, IA no puede crear una obra de arte, como una traducción, porque no tiene una perspectiva humana.
