A major in economics gives you...

A major in economics gives you a wide range of career options, just as described in the brochure you will receive when you will declare to be an economics major. (If you are interested, watch this video by the American Economic Association);

Economists perform a variety of roles in the corporate world. They forecast economic trends, analyze economic environments for firms, and predict the effects of government policies on firms. Economists also help firms formulate strategies for developing and marketing products and services. They assess market demands, undertake price and cost analysis, and conduct a variety of statistical work related to production. An undergraduate major in economics is also an ideal preparation for pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in the future. Under this category, our recent graduates work for employers such as

  • Fidelity
  • Oracle
  • Tufts Health Plan
  • State Street
  • National Grid
  • RSM US LLP
  • Charles River Development
  • Sun Life Financial
  • BNY Mellon
  • Putnam Investments
Government agencies, international organizations, and not-for-profits offer many interesting careers to economists. The Federal Reserve, the U.S. Departments of State, Labor, Agriculture and Commerce are the largest federal employers of economists. There are also jobs for economists in the Congressional Budget Office, the Office of Management and Budget for the President, Department of Justice, and various regulatory commissions. State and local governments hire economists too. The duties of governmental economists are very diverse and in large part depend on the particular governmental agency. Under this category, our recent graduates work for employers such as
  • International Monetary Fund
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Massachusetts Departments of Revenue and Energy
