There are 437 nuclear power plants installed in 31 countries with a net capacity of about 372 GWe. Of these, 289 reactors are 25 years old. The majority of the current nuclear reactor fleet is located in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. An additional 68 plants with an installed capacity of 65 GW are under construction in 15 countries. Projections by the Energy Information Agency (EIA) show that the future growth in nuclear power deployment will be in non-OECD countries. The share of nuclear in the world's electricity from the mid-1980s remains fairly constant at 16-17%. It is clear that nuclear power provides a carbon-free, reliable and environmentally responsible source of electric power. The growth in nuclear energy globally is undeniable with some retraction in the developed world.
As many as 60 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Member States have announced plans to adopt or increase the share of their nuclear power to meet their growing energy needs. The responsible development of a wide range of infrastructure by the Member States to adopt nuclear energy with appropriate safety, safeguards and security is vital.
