This fun and informative 4-hour afternoon program is recommended for beginner and intermediate kayakers looking to build a solid foundation of kayak touring skills. Our instructors will teach ACA Level 1 & Level 2 skills during this full day program. The basic curriculum for this course includes: personal preparation, the paddling environment, boat fit, equipment use, paddle strokes, maneuvers and recovery techniques. The day will unfold with shore and water based instruction sequenced out of UMass Lowell Boathouse.

Group size limited to 7 maximum.

Equipment

Those who own their own kayak and equipment are encouraged to use it during this course.

All necessary program equipment is provided.

Physical Exertion

Moderate: Participants will paddle 1-5 mi (2-8 km) and current may be present but weak. Waves will be less than 1ft with the potential for winds up to 10mph. Expect potentially cold water. Previous experience is recommended but not required. Swimming ability with life jacket assistance is required. Paddle times usually run 3-4 hours a day.

Prerequisites

Appropriate for adults and children 14 and older when accompanied by a parent.

Must be able to independently keep head above water while wearing in a life jacket/pfd.

No previous experience required. Beginners with a strong interest in kayaks are welcome!

Cost

The cost is $65 and includes full afternoon of instruction as well as boat and equipment rental. Please bring your own snacks and water.

Use your own boat for $50. Season pass holders $50.
