Sharing research data
For sharing large files related to your research projects use UMass Lowell’s OneDrive service at onedrive.uml.edu. If you need assistance with this, call the IT Service Desk at 978-934-4357. We’re here for you!
For faculty and staff, use OneDrive for Business.
Special Note Mac Users: Mac users also can tap into any of the file sharing services on campus, but will need to have these locations mapped and configured manually. If you need assistance with this, call the IT Service Desk. We’re here for you!
UMass Lowell Information Technology Services supports a variety of solutions to help you centrally store and manage data, then share that data within campus departments and with people outside the University.
Network File Shares (Departmental File Shares) allow faculty and staff to securely share Windows files (up to 20 GB) with departmental members or colleagues using their UMass Lowell Active Directory credentials. Typically, departmental file shares are mapped automatically for windows users that are on the domain and will show up as the X drive under the Network Location located in the Computer or My Computer location on the desktop. These file share locations are backed up nightly to ensure quick recovery in case of accidental deletion by the user. Each week this backup data is stored offsite at Iron Mountain.
Home Directories are used to store critical files in a private home directory—up to 2 GB. Home Directories shares are usually mapped automatically for Windows users on the domain and will show up as the Z drive under the Network Location located in the Computer or My Computer location on the desktop. Home directories also are backed up nightly to ensure quick recovery in case of accidental deletion by the user. Backup data is also stored offsite at Iron Mountain.
Please contact the IT Service Desk at x 4-4357 or 978-934-4357 for assistance on mapping to these drives or if you do not see these shortcuts located in the Network Locations section of your computer.
