New England Youth Wind Ensemble

The UMass Lowell New England Youth Wind Ensemble brings together 60 talented high school musicians from New England with college students from the UMass Lowell Department of Music.

The New England Youth Wind Ensemble is open to high school and home schooled students in grades 9 - 12. This type of honor's band /wind ensemble provides a unique opportunity for all students. If you have had the opportunity to perform in junior district, districts, or the like, this is for you! Each musician is challenged with significant responsibilities and the growth in each individual's musical skills and development is tremendous! Rehearsals are January through April, with an evening concert to conclude our journey.


As we look toward 2021 we intend rehearse, hybrid or virtual, and put together a concert reflective of our situation.  Should we be on campus our timeline is such:

SENIOR ENSEMBLE CONCERT 2021:

Friday April 30, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. Durgin Concert Hall

  • On April 30, 2021 students should arrive early for warm-up (approx. 6 p.m. or later). Specific Information (concert dress) and exact times are provided at rehearsals.
  • Sound check and a brief rehearsal will follow until 7:05 p.m.
  • Guests may enter the hall after 7:05 p.m. for our 7:30 p.m. concert.

Snow and Inclement Weather, Power Outages:

  • Virtual rehearsal: Our situation, if virtual, could be affected by power outages, but will be unaffected by snow. We will hold virtual rehearsals if feasible and students will be notified.
  • Hybrid rehearsal: if scheduled to be on campus and the university closes:
    • Our snow / inclement weather phone line is 978-934-2121. Rehearsal would be cancelled only if UMass Lowell does not have school.

Enrollment 2021

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: If virtual, Monday rehearsal 7-8:15pm (High School Winds) 

If on campus (or hybrid) Mondays: 7 - 8:50 p.m. January 25 - May 3

  • First Rehearsal: Monday, January 25, UMass Lowell Concert Hall (or virtual)
  • Enrollment will remain open through February 15

Lowell Cultural Council Grant 2020

NEYWE was grateful to receive a 2020 grant for Lowell student musicians to participate in NEYWE from The Lowell Cultural Council (LCC), whose mission is to promote excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences in order to improve the quality of life for all Lowell residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of this community through the re-granting of public monies awarded to the LCC by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). We thank them for their support.
