Practical Approaches for Faculty to Support Student Well-being & Mental Health

Faculty play an important role in the lives of college students, especially during times of uncertainty. Faculty can contribute to the creation of caring campus communities and productive learning environments that help students thrive and, when needed, seek professional help. This workshop provides some basic information about student mental health as well as practical approaches that faculty members can implement in the classroom to help support the mental health and well-being of students. Different strategies will be shared, and participants will be encouraged to share successful strategies of their own.

You Can Help a Student (YCHAS)

This workshop presents a simple overview of college student mental health, how to identify distress in students and how you can help as a faculty or staff member.

You Can Help a Friend (YCHAF)

This workshop helps students learn to recognize and respond to signs of distress in their peers.

A Deeper Dive into Mental Health Conversations

Have you had concerns about a student's mental health but weren't sure what to do? This interactive workshop led by UMatter2 and Counseling Services will highlight mental health issues in college students, including warning signs, followed by a discussion of how to manage situations that may arise. Participants will go through scenarios and talk through how to address them, getting feedback from a clinician.

Fresh Check Day, planned for October 2022, the signature program of the Jordan Porco Foundation, is an uplifting mental health promotion and suicide prevention event that includes interactive expo booths, peer-to-peer messaging, support of multiple campus departments and groups, free food, entertainment, and exciting prizes and giveaways. Fresh Check Day aims to create an approachable and hopeful atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and helps to build a bridge between students and the mental health resources available on campus, in the community, and nationally.
