Welcome to the Richard A. Miner School of Computer & Information Sciences!
We offer degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Our world-class faculty has active research programs in diverse areas across computer science. Our research programs are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and various companies including EMC, Google HP, Intel, Pfizer, and Sun. Six members of our faculty have received prestigious NSF Career awards to support their research.
We offer a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum that provides students with a strong foundation in both the software and hardware aspects of computing, as well as the mathematics and science that underlie the discipline. Students need not have taken programming courses in high school to succeed in our program. We are continually reexamining and revising our curriculum to stay current and to embrace the many ways in which computer technology influences the arts as well as the sciences. Our undergraduate students have ample opportunities to engage in funded research projects. Our graduates have been hired by companies such as 3COM, Analog Devices, Avid, BAE, Cisco, EMC, Fidelity, Google, IBM, iRobot, MITRE, Microsoft, Motorola, Oracle, Raytheon, and Segway.
Our facilities include a number of teaching and research laboratories, the New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center and the UMass Lowell Cyber Range, spanning diverse areas of computer science, bioinformatics, computer engineering, robotics, and computational mathematics.
