Standard

All standard classrooms are equipped with projectors and podium computers, enhancing teaching and learning experiences.

Smart teaching podium with multiple monitors

Teaching Podium

Each classroom has a teaching podium that houses all the remaining equipment listed below. It also has controls for switching which device is displayed on the projector or large-screen monitor as well as the audio controls for the room.

Desktop pc in horizontal position

In-room Computer

Most classrooms have an in-room computer equipped with the standard applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and more...) for your class. Specialized applications can be added per request. Please inquire for more information.

TT-12 iD document camera

Document Camera

A document camera (doc cam) allows printed materials to be projected or you can use paper to write on your “board” so that written materials are projected. A doc cam camera can zoom in and out, change positioning of the camera and automatically focus as well. See the Using Your Elmo Document Camera with Echo360 Universal Capture knowledge article for more information.

Podium audio system with various inputs and volume control

Audio Support

All classrooms have controls on the teaching podium that raise or lower the audio volume in-room playback. Some classrooms have wired or wireless microphones that can also support the instructor.

Lecture Capture

Each classroom can record whatever is displayed simultaneously recording with a video camera mounted in the room. The cameras can be positioned to also capture what is written on a whiteboard in the classroom. Please see the Lecture Capture knowledge article for more detailed information.

Connections to Other External Devices

There are cables to connect a laptop or other external device. Most classrooms use a HDMI connection for these devices. Selections for changing the input display are made via the control Extron panel.

All classrooms also can wirelessly connect an iPad or similar device to the in-room projection, allowing for free movement around the classroom.

Some classrooms and most conference rooms utilize Airtame, enabling a laptop to wirelessly connect to the display. Please see the Airtame knowledge article for more information.

Note: Currently, Airtame does not function with iPad.

Composer

Composer is a flexible classroom technology solution that helps faculty manage and share content across multiple displays. It supports structured collaboration by allowing instructors to present course materials, remote participants, annotated visuals, and student-shared content simultaneously, creating a clear and engaging learning environment without requiring additional apps, dongles or software.

Technology-Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL)

Classroom podium with large monitor and other smart technology

TEAL classrooms encourage team-based active learning by making it easier for students to collaborate and participate in group work.

Each TEAL classroom — there are two at Olsen Hall on North Campus and one in Coburn Hall on South Campus — is equipped with tables for six (referred to as “pods”) along the room’s perimeter. Each pod is centered around a 55-inch touchscreen monitor. Students wirelessly connect their laptops, tablets or phones to their group’s pod to collaborate on work.

Interested in teaching in a TEAL classroom? Request to Teach in a TEAL classroom.

You will receive a response to your request from the Registrar’s Office within 3 business days. Please note that room assignments are tentative; the Registrar’s Office reserves the right to update room assignments at any time to accommodate Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, and more

If a full semester is more than you need, you can reserve TEAL classrooms for one (or more) ad-hoc class periods. Ad-hoc reservations are available after the add/drop period each semester when the academic scheduling blackout has been removed. This is a great way to add team-based active learning methods to your syllabus without committing to a full semester.

Login to BookIt to reserve any one of the TEAL Classrooms, currently located in:

  • Olsen Hall, Room 330 (64 seats)
  • Olsen Hall, Room 322 (34 seats)
  • Coburn Hall, Room G50 (36 seats)
  • Coburn Hall, Room 161 (24 seats)
  • Coburn Hall, Room 165 (14 seats)
  • Graduate and Professional Studies, Room 105 (20 seats)

Once you reserve a TEAL classroom using BookIt, please email: classrooms@uml.edu to request a one-hour tutorial on how to use the TEAL equipment. Please provide a few meeting options, prior to the reservation, in your email.

For more information, please see the Getting Started with a TEAL Room knowledge article.
