Traveling Within U.S. Only:
If you are traveling within the United States only, makes sure to carry your original passport and visa document (i.e. Form I-20, Form DS-2019, Form I-797, Employment Authorization Card, etc.) If you are traveling far away from home or by bus, train, airplane. For local travel/close to home, simply carry pdf copies of above documentation on your cell phone.
Traveling Within the U.S. Territories:
Visiting Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands or the Northern Mariana Islands: no valid visa is needed. You will need to bring your Form I-20 and an unexpired Form I-94, passport and visa.
- Automatic Visa Revalidation - Travel to Canada, Mexico or Adjacent Islands with an expired F-1 visa. Note: this is not applicable for citizens from Iran, Syria and Sudan. For a complete list of what countries are exempt of this, see the State Sponsors of Terrorism country list.
- F-1 Students - Reentering the U.S.
- F-1 (Post) Optional Practice Training or STEM Extension
- International Faculty or Research Scholars (J-1, H-1, O-1, TN status, etc.)
- J-1 Students
- H-1 Cap Gap Extension: if you are on this status, do not travel outside of the U.S. consult with your H-1B Immigration Attorney for any travel advice.
