Research Interests

Unraveling the associations between diet quality and chronic diseases of aging in underrepresented populations, using novel analytical methods; determining the mediating role of the gut microbiome in these associations; designing and implementing dietary interventions.

Education

  • Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Nutritional Epidemiology, University of Massachusetts Lowell – Lowell, Massachusetts
  • Doctor of Science (Sc.D.): Epidemiology, University of Massachusetts Lowell – Lowell, Massachusetts
  • Master of Science (M.S.): Animal and Nutritional Sciences, University of New Hampshire – Durham, New Hampshire
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.): Political Science, University of New Hampshire – Durham, New Hampshire

Biosketch

Lisa Merrill, Sc.D. is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences. She investigates the role of nutrition on the bidirectional relation between the gut microbiome and physiological outcomes, including bone health, systemic inflammation, and cardiometabolic risk, with a focus on underrepresented populations. She has previously taught as an adjunct instructor and served on the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Interest Section (RIS) within the American Society for Nutrition.
