The University Orchestra is made up of undergraduate and graduate student musicians, UMass Lowell music faculty and alumni, and is open by audition to the Lowell community.

Under the direction of Mark Latham, the orchestra performs standard literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as challenging, diverse contemporary works. The String Section is coached by UMass Lowell Music alumna violist and violinist Theresa Cleary.
The University Orchestra presents two to four concerts annually at Durgin Hall, with outstanding students selected as featured soloists and prominent guest artists. Occasionally UMass Lowell choral groups join the orchestra. Recent concerts have included Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Holst’s The Planets, and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Audience members have commented that even familiar works take on a new freshness in the spirited and precise performances given by the University Orchestra musicians.

Tuesdays 7:30 - 9:20 p.m. and Fridays 3:00 – 4:50 p.m. in Durgin Hall.

Spring and Fall by appointment; please email Mark Latham.
