Who can use the Makerspace tools, materials, and equipment?

All active students, faculty and staff affiliated with UMass Lowell. This includes active graduate students and research assistants.

Can I use the machines for free?

All tools and equipment at the Lin Makerspace are free for users. Some machines require our safety training beforehand, which is also free. You can find more information and sign up for our trainings on the safety training page.

How much can I 3D print?

For fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, users have unlimited access. For stereolithography (SLA) / Masked stereolithography (MSLA) printing, each user is allotted 50 milliliters (mL) of resin per semester. However, clubs and capstone teams are offered unlimited material for the SLA/MSLA printers.

What materials can I laser cut?

Common user materials:

Check material compatibility before use. Cutting and engraving ability depends on the laser type.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) laser:

  • Acrylic (cut/engrave)
  • Fabric (cut/engrave)
  • Leather (cut/engrave)
  • PureBond plywood (cut/engrave – user supplied)
  • Cardboard (cut/engrave – user supplied)

Fiber laser (for engraving only):

  • Brass
  • Stainless steel
  • Anodized aluminum

We offer PureBond plywood and cardboard to all users who have completed the required safety training. If you’d like to bring your own materials, please email us at: makerspace@uml.edu to confirm they are safe and compatible with our machines.

Can I use the machine shop?

We do not offer a training for students to gain access to the machine shop. However, if you're interested in learning more about Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, consider joining the Machining Club. No prior experience is required, and members have access to the machine shop.

Does the Makerspace have any events?

We host our seasonal Makernights in the fall, winter, and spring. We also collaborate with student clubs, academic departments, and colleges across UMass Lowell to support a variety of events throughout the academic year. Can I use the machines for free?

For machining requests; please contact John Connery, Assistant Director of the Makerspace, by email at: john_connery@uml.edu to schedule a meeting. Machining services are available strictly for academic and research purposes.

Do I need to be apart of the Francis College of Engineering?

No. The Lin Makerspace is open to all active UMass Lowell students, faculty and staff—regardless of college or major.
