Mary ’60 and John Alden are proud supporters of UMass Lowell, guided by a shared commitment to helping others.
Mary, a native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, earned her degree in elementary education from Lowell State Teachers College and began her career as a teacher before raising their three children. John, originally from Stoneham, built a distinguished career at UPS, rising to vice chairman before retiring in 2000.
Inspired by the strong preparation and support Mary received as a student, the Aldens established the Mary Curtin Alden Endowment Fund in 2004 to provide scholarships for education majors from their hometowns and surrounding communities. Their $1.3 million in total commitments have helped many grateful students pursue careers in education.
They also supported the creation of the Mary Curtin Alden Model Classroom in renovated Coburn Hall, further strengthening teacher preparation at UMass Lowell and reflecting their enduring commitment to education.
