Core Curriculum Essential Learning Outcomes Assessment

With a new Core Curriculum and its seven Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs) in place, UMass Lowell is developing its first-ever comprehensive general education assessment plan. Academic Affairs leadership and faculty governance are collaborating to design a faculty-led process that will allow us to reflect upon authentic evidence of student learning and to have a campus-wide conversation about the hopes and expectations we have for our students’ development across all disciplinary areas.

Building upon the successful model developed with our colleagues at Middlesex Community College using grant support from the Massachusetts Performance Incentive Fund, our approach to general education assessment provides professional development on both assignment design and evaluation techniques using the LEAP VALUE Rubrics, which were developed nationally by faculty through the leadership of the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), and the Degree Qualifications Profile (DQP) developed by the Lumina Foundation.
