  • Brief introduction about who you are, your role, and your academic focus:
My name is Sotara, and I am a senior at UMass Lowell studying as a Psychology major with Spanish minor. I am currently an RHSA Peer Leader for the 2025-2026 academic year as well!
  • Favorite hobbies: I like reading and listening to music!
  • What is your favorite thing about UMass Lowell (UML)?
All the opportunities that have been presented to me! For example, study abroad and student leadership positions within the RHSA!
  • Why did you choose to attend UMass Lowell?
I chose UMass Lowell mainly because of the lower cost and location.
  • What are your future academic and/or career goals?
I hope to continue my studies and earn a Masters in Social Work! I want to primarily serve marginalized communities and give back to my own, here in Lowell, MA.
  • What has being involved with the River Hawk Scholars Academy meant to you?
Being involved with RHSA has been super meaningful. I have always had a passion for helping my peers and my community. Since middle school, I have always participated in student leadership programs, and I am glad to continue that here with the RHSA.
  • What inspires you to support RHSA and/or first-generation students?
I think having experience firsthand with the many struggles first-generation students deal with have really inspired me to become a Peer Leader with the RHSA.
  • Looking back, what advice would you give to yourself in your first year of college?
Speak up in class! Answering questions not only makes class more fun, but it also allows the professor to get to know you a lot better.
  • What advice would you give to fellow UMass Lowell students?
Use multiple calendars to keep yourself up to date with assignments and other tasks!
  • What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college student?
Being a first-generation student means that I have overcome unique struggles which have shaped who I am as a person.
