Our department is comprised of award-winning faculty members, dedicated staff and exceptional students who are committed to excellence in education and research in the life sciences.
Faculty in our department are engaged in research in the areas of neuroscience, cancer biology, developmental cell biology, molecular evolution, invertebrate systematics, functional morphology, structural biology, environmental microbiology, virology, climate change biology, and biology education research. Much of this research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, NASA and the Department of Defense, along with various foundations and companies.
A core mission of the department is to integrate teaching, research, and community service, and to that end, we offer undergraduate and graduate students laboratory-based research opportunities, as well as industry cooperative experiences and service-learning courses.
