HEROES is a unique collaborative research and development center between UMass Lowell and the U.S. Army Natick MA Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC).

HEROES encourages and facilitates interdisciplinary technological advancements for improved survivability and sustainability of U.S. Troops. The center is located on campus where UMass Lowell faculty and students and NSRDEC scientists and engineers work side by side and share laboratory, office and conference room space. HEROES is leveraging the intellectual assets and resources of the U.S. Army and UMass Lowell to work together to find creative and effective solutions to the challenges faced by our men and women in uniform every day around the world.

Sukant Tripathy, Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, died on December 12, 2000 in a swimming accident in Hawaii after lecturing at a conference of the Polymer Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. In 1985, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He founded and served as director of the Center for Advanced Materials from 1992. He also served the University as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs from 1994 to 1996.
