UMass Lowell faculty members, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students work closely with DEVCOM SC scientists and engineers at the UMass Lowell HEROES and DEVCOM SC state-of-the-art facilities to develop new technologies to empower soldiers.

HEROES is a unique collaborative research and development center between UMass Lowell and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM SC). Together we drive technological development for improved protection, sustainability, and effectiveness of the American Warfighter.

We are located on campus where we support numerous projects and leverage the expertise across disciplines from the colleges of sciences, engineering, health sciences and management at the University through interactions with the industry to have a profound impact on the regional economy.

HEROES has a unique role in transforming scientific discoveries to innovative technological solutions in areas that include:

  • Chem/Bio, thermal, fire, microbial, insect and ballistic protection
  • Aerial delivery and UAS
  • Portable power and wearable electronics
  • Human augmentation and human systems integration
  • Sensors for chem/bio agents
  • Nutritional intervention

Our desire to discover has allowed us to improve the lives of US soldiers now and in the years to come.

Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower SoldiersĀ  (HEROES) is a joint research and development initiative of UMass Lowell and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM SC) that brings together complementary expertise across disciplines to solve complex scientific and engineering problems related to soldier protection, performance and survivability. The HEROES initiative accelerates research and innovation by tapping into the intellectual assets and research facilities of both organizations.

By maximizing synergistic interactions HEROES will serve as a hub for knowledge by expanding research and developmental efforts in emerging areas to provide solutions for challenges that our Heroes (U.S. Warfighters) face in the field.
