About

HEROES is a unique collaborative research and development center between UMass Lowell and the U.S. Army Natick MA Soldier Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC SC).

Part of the Center for Advanced Materials, Harnessing Emerging Research Opportunities to Empower Soldiers (HEROES) is a UMass Lowell / U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC SC) multidisciplinary partnership bringing together expertise of CCDC SC scientists and engineers with UMass Lowell faculty and students to solve complex scientific and technological problems.

HEROES has a unique role in relating scientific discoveries to innovative technological solutions in areas that include flame, thermal, chem/bio, microbial and ballistic protection; airdrop (parachutes and suspension lines); portable power (photovoltaics and thermoelectrics); wearable electronics; nutrition and safety of combat ration, and advanced packaging.

UMass Lowell faculty members, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students work closely with CCDC SC scientists and engineers at the UMass Lowell HEROES and CCDC SC state-of-the-art facilities to develop new technologies to empower soldiers.

The HEROES-CCDC SC partnership benefits from expertise throughout the University in the fields of nanomanufacturing; plastics, mechanical and electrical engineering; physics; chemistry and biological sciences as well as interactions with the local industry to have a profound impact on the region's economy.
