Department of Sociology

UMass Lowell's Department of Sociology prepares students for careers in a variety of fields by providing a rigorous understanding of the social forces and institutions that affect human behavior.
Through excellence in teaching, research and service, the department seeks to contribute to a thorough, scientific understanding of society that will serve as a powerful resource for strengthening citizenship and communities. Through academic work, students gain skills to think critically and to make meaningful contributions to community-building.

  • My parents knew the power of education even if they were not educated themselves.

    Gordon Halm '12 learned from an early age that hard work pays off. The Ghana native and father of three earned his Bachelor's in Liberal Arts in 2012 and is pursuing his Master's in Peace and Conflict Studies.
