The goal of the undergraduate program in nursing at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is to prepare professional nurses who have the ability to think critically, to utilize knowledge of relevant theories, and to apply the nursing process when caring for clients of all ages in a variety of settings.

Upon successful completion of the program in Nursing, graduates are prepared as a generalist for beginning professional nursing roles.

The clinical aspects of the Nursing program are developed, coordinated, and supervised by the nursing faculty and are provided in collaboration with members of the community agencies. Placements may include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Greater Lawrence Family Health Service, Holy Family Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Lowell Community Health Center, Lawrence General Hospital, Lowell General Hospital, Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Tewksbury Hospital, UMass Memorial Medical Center, VNA of Greater Lowell, Massachusetts General Hospital, Winchester Hospital rehabilitation centers and nursing homes, and other community based health care providers. Additional agencies are utilized when necessary to enhance student learning. Clinical placement of students is at the discretion of the supervising faculty. Students are expected to provide transportation to clinical experiences.

The Solomont School of Nursing offers state-of-the-art simulation laboratories with observation rooms, a demonstration hospital wing and true-to-life exam rooms. Futuristic-looking classroom chairs move on wheels for discussion groups and every lecture room has access to “smart” technology for presentations.

The nursing program is approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, One Dupont Circle NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036-1120.
