UMass Lowell peer tutors go through rigorous training to be certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), ensuring students are receiving the highest level of quality tutoring. Additionally, our peer tutors must receive a faculty recommendation, maintain a 3.000 GPA, and have earned at least a "B+" in any course they tutor. Key Job Components, Peer Tutor

  • Demonstrate academic competency in course(s) tutored.
  • Utilize probing questions to help students identify knowledge gaps and reinforce materials.
  • Use Bloom's Taxonomy learning theory framework to identify which stage of the learning process a student is in and what steps they need to take to better understand material and achieve desired results.
  • Model and demonstrate effective study habits, techniques, and tools.
  • Identify challenges that may be disrupting the student's learning process and determine the best course of action to overcome them.

Key Job Components, Lead Peer Tutor

Experienced tutors with at least 2-3 semesters of experience may have the opportunity to be promoted into the role of “Lead Peer Tutor.” Job responsibilities include: 

  • Model exemplary peer tutoring skills, including all the responsibilities listed above.
  • Allow new tutors to shadow Lead Peer Tutor shifts when possible.
  • Participate in department events such as tabling, workshops, and other academic activities.
  • Help organize and present at the New England Peer Tutoring Association (NEPTA) conference, a peer-led event.
  • Support staff during tutor trainings by leading assigned breakout sessions.
  • Keep track of peer tutors’ training progress.
  • Observe peer tutors and provide constructive feedback on strengths and areas for improvement.
