CHELMSFORD -- Pasquale "Pat" Condo died Thursday, July 9, at his home surrounded by his family after a yearlong struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was the husband of Muriel E. (Goodwin) Condo for 42 years.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 6, 1928, a son of Dr. Annunziato and Maria Condo. His first five years were spent in Florence, Italy, and he later returned to America where his father established a medical practice in Haverhill.

Mr. Condo graduated from Haverhill High. He obtained a B.S. degree in chemistry and mathematics from Purdue University in 1953, and an M.S. in mathematics from Lowell Technological Institute in 1968.

He served in the Army, 393rd Field Artillery, during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post #313 in North Chelmsford.

Mr. Condo was associate professor of mathematics at UMass Lowell for 32 years, retiring in January 1996 with the title of professor emeritus. He especially enjoyed being able to reach his students.

Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Condo worked in the semiconductor industry, working for Sylvania Electric and CBS in Lowell as an engineer. He was a member of many professional and civic organizations and has authored numerous mathematics texts and papers. He was also a consultant to the Educational Testing Board in Trenton, N.J., for many years.

He was an usher and communicant of St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford. When he was diagnosed in July 1997 with ALS, Mr. Condo decided he would be proactive in trying to fight the illness. He participated in drug trials and research, and he and his family participated in walks and fund-raisers.
