The Department of Biological Sciences offers a Ph.D. program in Applied Biology. The goal of the Applied Biology program is to train outstanding students and enable their contributions to the wide array of life sciences research needs.
The program combines fundamental and rigorous training in the pursuit of new knowledge regarding the mechanisms of biological processes coupled with the skills needed to apply this knowledge in the workforce. In addition to traditional academic careers in research and education at colleges and universities and academic research hospitals and institutes, our graduates are also prepared for non-academic careers. In the links provided you will find information about program admission requirements and the curriculum. Prospective students are encouraged to have established contact with potential program faculty research advisors before applying. Specific questions about the Applied Biology Ph.D. can be addressed to Dr. Jeffrey R. Moore, our doctoral program coordinator.
The Department of Biological Sciences also collaborates with the Department of Chemistry in offering the Ph.D. option in biochemistry. It is also possible to obtain a Ph.D. degree in Marine Science and Technology or Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology through Intercampus Graduate School Programs offered together with other campuses of the UMass System.
If you have specific questions about working with a Biological Sciences faculty member via one of these collaborative the doctoral programs, contact Dr. Jeffrey R. Moore, our doctoral program coordinator.
